MOJMIR NOVAKOVIC I KRIES (Croatia)

“Out of small instruments – the lijerica (knee violin), bagpipes, a small percussion kit and a really subtle but effective use of beats and samples – came forth a huge, driving, mesmerising, passionate sound fronted by the deep, stentorian vocals which emanate from the towering, skeletal presence of Novakovic… Easily one of the best live sets I’ve seen in this year.” Ian Anderson , fRoots

Charismatic Croatian vocalist Mojmir Novaković came to fame with iconic ethno-rock band Legen. With his new group Kries (‘bonfire’) he has created a dynamic Ur-Croatian-Early Middle Ages-shamanic-dancefloor music that harks back to a time when ethnic identities between Venice, Istria, Dalmatia, Pannonia and Bosnia were less rigidly fixed.

TONI KITANOVSKI & CHERKEZI (Macedonia)

Funky Macedonian brass band Cherkezi from Skopje’s Gypsy-Mahala is named after its patriarch Cherkezi Rashid and boasts three generations of Rashids. Add electric jazz guitarist Toni Kitanovski - who returned from the US with Berklee’s Charles Mingus Prize for Composition - and you have a potent, feverish, scarily high-class amalgam of Balkan Orient and world-savvy chic.

Toni Kitanovski (guitar), Cherkezi Rashid (trumpet), Asan Rashid (trumpet), Ali Rashid (sax), Vilhen Mamudov (tuba), Sefer Ismailov (tupan), Aleksandar Sekulovski (drums).
