A rip-roaring Gypsy music party...

with live music, Balkan Dj sets, and rare film footage (including of Guča brass festival in Serbia, and Esma Redžepova shot by Garth Cartwright) to celebrate the launch of the soundtrack to Garth Cartwright’s Balkan Gypsy adventures in one of London’s most authentic venues.  Garth will be there to chat about his travels and the musicians he met.

Ivo is the legendary king of Balkan Wedding music, a clarinet player from Bulgaria, who won a BBC Award for World Music in 2006. He played a great concert for Balkan Fever London 2007, and we're delighted he's back in town with his Wedding Band, including his wife Maria as singer for what will certainly be a high energy concert in Cargo. KOBY ISRAELITE BAND



Israeli musician Koby took up accordion after hearing Romanian Gypsy legends Taraf de Haidouks. He recorded three albums on John Zorn's label Tzadik and his band is now playing festivals around Europe. HisTaraf-meets-Frank Zappa blend of music will be a perfect opening act for IVO,

Taksim Trio is one of Istanbul's amazing musical phenonema, a supergroup of three top quality musicians.  The most well known of these is clarinettist Husnu Senlendirici, whose albums of beautiful melodic instrumental music have sold in their 100,000s.  He is joined by Ismail Tunçbilek  on Baglama and Aytaç Dogan on Kanun. Between them they weave magic, with oriental tunes that sound both ancient but at the sametime very fresh and contemporary.  Music for the heart and mind....

Following fabulous Omer Klein's UK debut performance in July, we are proud to announce that he will appear at London Jazz Festival 2008. Don't miss this young pianist's amazing music that will bring delight to your soul!  For this concert Omer appears with percussionist Ziv  Ravitz. Opening for Taksim Trio at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Omer Klein is the newest force in the Israeli-New York City Jazz movement.  The Village Voice praises his originality: "He's arrived without echoing any of the masters".  All About Jazz notes his "tumultuous lyricism" and Jazz Times describes his compositions as "folk songs for the melting pot of the new millennium, with strong Middle Eastern and African elements".  Omer Klein’s music sits perfectly on the unbroken line between Jazz and World Music currently being explored by such stars as Roberto Fonseca and Gilad Atzmon.

Master Lebanese oud (Arabic lute) player and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil takes inspiration from the poems of contemporary Portuguese writers Mário Raínho, Tiago Torres da Silva, Rui Manuel and the older José Luís Gordo, and from the free-spirited, amazingly mature voice of young Portuguese Fado star, Ricardo Ribeiro.  Still in his twenties, Ribeiro is an authentic singer rooted fully in tradition but open to adventure in new directions.

Weaving music around words and words around music, with long term partners Luciano Biondini (accordion), Michel Godard (tuba and bass) and Jarrod Cagwin (percussion), the warm sounds of oud and voice create moods that are nothing less than exquisitely beautiful, where the saudade of Fado and the yearning of Abou-Khalil’s Middle Eastern melodic sense combine to create a completely new music – a kind of imagined folklore that seems to have existed all along.

Kudsi Erguner is a ney flute player, a master of the Mevlevi-Sufi music of the 'whirling dervishes'. In addition to traditional music Kudsi has performed with Peter Gabriel, Jean Michel Jarre, Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook, George Aperghis, Didier Lockwood, and many others.

For this concert he blends Turkish Sufi music with a jazz approach. HIs band includes two of Turkey's leading muezzin who will perform the Sufi chants as well as Serbian jazz pianist Bojan Z.

Esma Redzepova is the wonderful Queen of the Gypsies.

From Macedonia / former Yugoslavia she is truly a legend!
Her powerful voice will move you to dance  or to tears.

She's played in London a few times now. The last time with Fanfare Ciocarlia in a sold out Barbican, she stole the show!  This time she'll be here with her own concert in an intimate club where you can dance with her.

Though she could not have children herself, she adopted 52 abandonned orphans to look afterthem. Yes 52!! No wonder her life work was recognised by the United Nations.

But the most important thing is her great voice and wonderful music!! She has sung all overthe world, and featured in several films. You may know her song Chaje Shukarije, used in the Borat movie.

Combining the wild drive of Balkan dance rhythms, the festive spirit of Gypsy song, and the emotional intensity of Turkish melody with urban jazz and drum n’ bass grooves, Bulgarian-born guitarist Lubo Alexandrov has developed a unique musical style that won him a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for his album Kaba Horo (Enja) in 2007.  Lubo returns to the UK with his 6-piece band after a stunning debut at last year’s Balkan Fever London festival.
