MARIA RADUCANU QUINTET :: EUROPALIA ARTS FESTIVAL ROMANIA :: EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL

St Johns Church Leytonstone, London Fri, Nov 22, 2019 8:00 PM

Entry Requirements: none

At St John's Church Leytonstone London E11 1HH Doors open 7.00pm concert starts 8.00pm bar available.

“Possessing one of the most distinctive voices in the world, Maria mixes Romanian dirges with Fado, Rembetika, blues and improvisation, in creating a music that is pure, deeply emotional and goes straight to the heart.” John Zorn

A rebel soul, Maria Răducanu grew up listening to Billie Holiday, Betty Carter and Nat King Cole, wishing that someday she would sing Coltrane’s compositions with Keith Jarrett’s imagination and expressiveness. She brings a free spirit to the best songs from around the world - especially those suited to the female voice. Her interpretation of heart-stoppingly beautiful Romanian tradition such as the classic Foaie Verde confirm her as a modern-day Maria Tănase, and she adds fado and Balkan folklore, lullabies and Russian romances, Sephardic standards, tangos and bossa, flowing together into an all-encompassing, utterly-captivating sound-world.

Maria Răducanu, vocal, guitar
Nik Meinhold, piano
Krister Jonsson, guitar
Chris Dahlgren, double bass
Michael Griener, drums
