Kazum presents:
EVA QUARTET - Bulgarian Voices
Entry Requirements: none
Experience the sublime voices of Eva Quartet in the atmospheric St Cyprian’s Church near Baker Street underground.
“Music of intensity, beauty, high skill, and international stature.” (Rootsworld)
Eva Quartet are Daniela Stoitchkova, Evelina Hristova, Gergana Dimitrova, and Sofia Kovacheva, four solo singers from the world-famous women’s folk choir "Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares".
They present a programme of heart-warming and breath-taking folk and sacred music from Bulgaria’s rich vocal traditions, both ancient and rooted but also with their own modern styling and featuring contemporary compositions. With their deeply intuitive close harmony, virtuosic voice control and uniquely Bulgarian vocal techniques, the four singers offer a moment out of time in which listeners are invited into a sometimes intimate sometimes raucous sound world. Eva Quartet was formed in 1995 by the same four women, who were singing together in the Orthodox Church. Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, it is no surprise that Eva Quartet’s four voices seem to blend as one instrument.
“This is meticulously made music, as is that of a classical vocal ensemble, but the voices yearn, surge, linger, interlock, drone and counterpoint, and on the up-tempo pieces fizz and chatter, in ways that no Western-classical ensembles, even the progressive ones, match in style or sound.” (Rootsworld – from a review of their latest album “Minka” (on the UK-based World Music Network label) Eva Quartet last performed in London for Balkan Fever Festival in 2008. It is a pleasure to welcome them back after so long. The concert will be unamplified in the Gothic revival St Cyprian’s church with its splendid filigree rood screen. Seating is unreserved.
Drinks will be available to buy before the concert. 5 minutes’ walk from Baker Street station.
With kind support from the Bulgarian Embassy London and World Music Network.
